I believe that dreams are complex expressions and are caused by a multiple of factors: biological, psychological, and (maybe) spiritual. But your dream seems to me to be partially, at least, an accurate reflection of our current political situation. I'm concerned that many of us may be using outdated maps for a situation that doesn't have a real precedence.

We still choose the maps that guide us. The nostalgia that your essay stirs in me is for more than a physical map but for the old fashioned attempt to adhere as close as we can to what is actually there. Who among us has not been told by Siri that “we have arrived,” only to find ourselves in the middle of a bridge or worse, a parking lot? Thank you, Frank, for stirring up a good metaphor.

An amazing dream journey. I've always been fascinated by maps and wondered about who inhabited the spaces described, both within and without the lines. From Candyland to Middlearth, to the routes that armies took, and migrations of peoples, to a trip along old U.S. 20 from Boston to Seattle. Tannia's relative, Jedediah, made maps of the Shenandoah Valley for Stonewall Jackson. An amazing family you come from, Frank. Your dad and Lewis and Clark.

Your dad must have been a very detailed person to have that job.
